Tras seis meses de inactividad, en los que Duchamp se dedicó intensivamente al ajedrez, una gran capa de polvo se había posado sobre el Gran vidrio, que el artista había guardado horizontalmente sobre dos caballetes. Un día, Man Ray se presentó en el estudio de Duchamp con una cámara panorámica y, sólo con la iluminación de una bombilla desnuda, realizó una fotografía de larga exposición del panel inferior [1]. La obra fue titulada por Duchamp Élevage de poussière, que podría traducirse como “criadero” o “cultivo” de polvo, si bien en francés el término “élever” significa también “elevar” o “levantar”. La imagen de Man Ray presenta el Gran vidrio en primer plano, un fragmento que ocupa el total del encuadre, constituyendo un universo en sí mismo, un “paisaje lunar”, donde lo primero que llama la atención es que la transparencia del vidrio se encuentra totalmente opacada por el polvo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;Se ha señalado que en Criadero de polvo se encuentran reunidas gran parte de las direcciones del trabajo de Duchamp [2]: en primer lugar, la pereza –pero sobre todo la inactividad, indispensable en la configuración del readymade–, el “preferiría no hacerlo” causante de que el polvo se acumule en el cristal en un período de abandono del trabajo; en segundo lugar, la idea de gravedad, esencial para que el polvo, y la fotografía así lo atestigua, repose en la parte de abajo, en el dispositivo “soltero”; en tercer lugar, la pintura, ya que algo de este polvo se emplearía, con posterioridad, como pigmento para los tamices, esos siete conos por los que pasa el gas de luz que sale de los solteros a la novia; y, por supuesto, la fotografía, dado que la superficie del cristal ha sido “expuesta”, y el polvo se ha posado casi como en un rayorama, por contacto.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;Aunque el polvo pueda ser visto aquí como un elemento azaroso, Duchamp había pensado con detenimiento su inclusión en la obra. En sus notas, aparece una referencia explícita: “para los tamices, en el vidrio, dejar que se deposite el polvo sobre esta parte, un polvo de 3 ó 4 meses y limpiar bien alrededor, de modo que este polvo sea una especie de color (pastel transparente)”[3]. En su búsqueda de un color neutro, Duchamp pensó en la materia gris del polvo –semejante a la materia gris del cerebro– como un “no-color”. Un color que iba a nacer, a criarse –a crearse–, directamente sobre la obra; sólo después habría que fijarlo. Esta fotografía presentaría, entonces, no sólo un criadero de polvo, sino también un criadero o un invernadero de color. Según Hamilton, para permitir el paso del gas, los tamices debían ser “porosos” y permeables, y el polvo era sin duda el elemento que mejor reproducía dicha porosidad. Octavio Paz ha observado que el color aparece aquí a la manera de que lo que Duchamp, para diferenciarlo del “color aparente”, llama “color nativo”, un color cuyas moléculas imperceptibles serían las que forman los colores reales, siendo, en realidad, el negativo, el no-color, del color aparente: “los colores de Duchamp no existen para ser vistos sino pensados (…) colores cerebrales que vemos con los ojos cerrados” [4]. o Sam Hsieh (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;1950, Taiwan) - escena artística neoyo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;rkina &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;de finales de los ‘70 y principios &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;de los ‘80. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;En su segundo &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;One Year Performance&lt;/span&gt; (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;1981) &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;Hsieh durante un año entero  “fichaba” cada hora en un reloj especialmente diseñado para ello que se hizo instalar en su apartamento. Este reloj dividió la vida de Hsieh durante ese año en pequeñas fracciones de tiempo destrozando la &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;continuidad de cualquier actividad o reflexión con interrupciones constantes, por no hablar de la falta de sueño que ocasionaba. Sólo percibimos el paso del tiempo cuando este no se ajusta a nuestra actividad, y siempre lo hacemos en parámetros negativos (”no tengo tiempo para…” o “tengo que es&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:courier new;"&gt;perar hasta…”). Para esta obra Hsieh liberó el parámetro tiempo de todos estos convencionalismos y contextualizaciones, para experimentar el paso del tiempo en toda su pureza. On the one hand it may seem a paradoxical standpoint to take given historical clichés regarding artists’ sources of inspiration - the somewhere-from-inside-their-own-psyche approach - but if an artist wishes to contribute to a discourse which is (or should be) on-going in society, finding a site from which to do that becomes a necessity of the first order.  Thus in order to produce images relevant to a debate or to formulate pertinent questions that need asking requires knowledge. Knowledge which is transformed then into images because, in the final analysis, we are visual artists. The position we take has geographical, chronological and cultural co-ordinates. These act both as parameters and as the subject of a discourse in themselves. The stance is also determined by such things as gender, skin colour and political convictions. What is not implied here is that by reading the texts and looking at the images here the art works themselves will be fully explained. If that was the case they would not be art works but illustrations of aspects of a theory. What is on offer is a certain degree of reverse engineering and contextualisation of our work. Both of us would assert that what follows is an approximation in text and images of what we were reading, thinking or discussing while in the process of generating certain works. Those processes take place in parallel&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;They are interlocked and clearly influence each other but they are not chained together. It often appears that, having started from one position, the world itself insists on connecting us up to everything else from that (temporary) starting point. A spider’s web of interrelationships. The real creative work usually takes place at times and in places unrelated to the research and reading—walking along the street or lying in bed half asleep. Ideas come unbidden and, when the idea is good, it feels sometimes as if it had been there all along waiting to be discovered. Thus what is made available here is a way of thinking or a way to approach specific thematic territories. All of this should be borne in mind while getting involved with this project since much of our work is concerned with hidden definitions, diverted attention - and occasional wilful misdirection.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;Using research as an artistic strategy implies the critical acquisition of knowledge in particular areas and its artistic transformation. The definition of the field of knowledge, the methods of collecting information, the kinds of information collected and where it comes from are all open-ended.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;As are the connections made between different nodes of information. What is important in this first stage is the process of investigation itself. After a while, continuous immersion in the chosen material enables certain interesting problems to crystallise and may also suggest methods of materialising them.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;Up to this point the process is not unlike systematic, scientific investigation. This is not to suggest that the process (either in science or art) is linear. It is interactive in nature. Thus one of the interesting features is how various ‘levels’ of information may find themselves in the same catego ry-a scienti fic study of  stereotypes along with a matchbox from Sweden and Korean stick-it notes bought in Senegal, for instance.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;It may be even more indiscriminate. A found image may generate associations and ideas which have to be followed up; reading may produce an mental image that has to be refined and investigated and so on. Thus although the chain leading to the final image(s) may well turn out to be purely associative, there are references to various levels ranging from the personal to the socio-historical and to current social and political debate.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: courier new;"&gt;However, where the scientist is bound to produce results which can be subjected to a special form of logic and verification, the artist has greater freedom to speculate and the work produced is more likely to represent a process of questioning than the presentation of any (however theoretical) answers.
